conforming

today in class we talked about religion and politics. are they seperate or are they interwined? is the relationship still the same today as it was way back in the 4th century? some things i thought are beginning to become skewed. like today when dr. borders asked if state had any involvement in church, i quickly assumed yes but i was wrong. preachers cant endorse politicians and support one government over another..
another thing that kinda got my attention today was how early christians didnt care about survival bc they believed in a realized eschatology, then why did they conform to governments to survive. i believe the one thing that you should hold strong in and not bend for anyone is religion. its just a thought provoker how churches have conformed to government.

history, today!!

the topic of the dead sea scrolls was actually very entertaining to me. it had more than to do with the usual religion. we had a little bit of history of how they were found. we got a little economics out of it, by tearing up the scrolls you can make more money. although seems a little odd that nomadic desert people would be interested more in money then like water or food or shelter.
more importantly though is how the scrolls connect us from today to the past, way far away past. these scrolls were found 60 or 70 years ago and they are still preserved and outdate the masoretic text that is the basis for our bible today. its historical evidence like this that helps someone like me help solidify religion. makes me wonder what else is hidden just waiting to be unearthed.

the proofs in that pudding stuff

just like everyone else on this blog, I too am excited about the project. Not really for the fact that we're trying to find a correlation between grades and learning, but simply bc of the fact that we're doing something different from every other class. im excited to see if grades really do reflect actual knowledge.
i would love to see if our class, which is not neccesarily focused on grades, could actually debate and have more knowledge of a religious topic then another class whose focus is on grades. this would definitely prove that grades are not the only means by which to gauge someones intelligence.
so lets do well on this project of ours!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

change?

changing ourself to change others is just an easy thing to say but such a hard thing to do. first we must become who we want to be to make the change possible. we've been who we are for about 20 years now. maybe its too late for us to change so easily, or maybe being in college at our age is the perfect time to change to who we want to be.
College is supposed to be all about trying to find out WHAT you're going to do for the rest of your life. Cant it also be about WHO you're going to be for the rest of your life. we should start, now, to figure out if we want to be somebody that changes what we see wrong or change so that the person we are is not affected by the wrong we see.
we see things we dont like everyday. in our own lives, on campus, in our country, on this planet. we see the big problems and think we cant have any impact in changing them, but lets start small. if there's something we dont like about ourselves or our college, those can easily be changed. i think if we start by making small changes we can end up making the big changes

New idea!!!

the little "field trip" was just what i needed for the day. all that day i was feeling slow, and lethargic. to be honest i was just gonna sit through our class eagerly waiting to get out so i could get lunch and take a nap. the field trip quickly snapped me awake.
the lesson in the field trip was all about interactions. how Dr. Borders interacted with the bees was related to how we interact with society, specifically Huntingdon. Dr. Borders learned how to interact with his bees not by sitting in a room and listening to someone tell him how to bee keep, he learned by going out and doing. gaining experience. he learned how to interact and be comfortable with the bees so much so that he can now do it without full body protection.
i think what Dr. Borders was trying to get across was that to figure out who you are cant be learned or taught in an institution. its learned by going out and creating experiences for yourself that shapes who you wanna be. i like this new idea of being guided but learning on our own, not being dictated life with pen and paper.

you scratch my back, I'll think about scratching yours

in class we brought to light a interesting but awful truth. it's not what you know but who you know. alot times more qualified people get beat out for a job by a more connected person. it's obviously not the best thing ever but it's just the way of the world.
the way Dr. Borders explained the patron-client seems, to me, like a sports or talent agent. the agent tries to help there client to success, while if the client becomes wildly successful the agent can then pursue more high profile clients. if the first client just completely falls flat then the agents reputation takes a blow.
im sure if the clients we discussed in class spent as much time and effort building a career or craft instead of  bulstering their patron, then they would not have need for a patron in the first place. might even have clients of their own.

Whats important?

So were all  blogging, not because we want to, but because its a grade. some people have probably found this actually kind of fun, i know i have. however, i believe Dr. Borders intended this to be a tool. this is not just a grade, but a tool for us to share with each other whats important to our souls or spirit as individuals and as collective christians.
Nothing puts whats important in perspective like a busy weekend. whether its school work or athletics, theres always something to slow you down and realize that life itself is important, people are important, your faith (or faithing) is important.
Some people actually like school, it can be fun sometimes. some people enjoy being athletes, which is totally fine too. I, however, want to experience all that God has created in this world, or at least as much as i can. the good and the bad. God created this world, why not enjoy all that you can? you only get one life. perhaps all this can be categorized under faithing, the verb, but couldn't it, in some cases, be synonymous with just living life?

whats YOUR truth?

oh well hello there, didnt notice you there reading my blog.  well sit down and take load off and enjoy my blog if you will.
does anyone else feel like are religion class is, in some ways, more than just your average, run of the mill, religion class. to me, the class has a hint of philosophical lectures with religion as the topic. i enjoy our religion class. i enjoy open discussion and tough questions. and whether Dr. Borders means to or not, i enjoy watching him lead us into answering our own questions.
for most of the last 2 weeks we've been talking about perceptions and what is actual truth. to questions such as these, i think the only answer that is correct is the answer you discover for yourself. your truth can be what you see, or what you believe, or what is popularly proven to be true. your truth can be all of these, or can be none of these. to me, truth and perception is whatever you decide. agree or disagree?

first blog ever!!!!!

hello fellow borders classmate,
this, obviously, is my "first blog ever!!!!!", so whoever is first to read, please be gentle. I have had Dr. Borders as a teacher before and thoroughly enjoyed his class, although this semester seems it might already be a little different, but in a good way. At first i was skeptical about this whole blog thing, but maybe i can make this fun, i can express my mind semi-anonymously.
So far we've only had one class at this point, but already presents interesting ideas and questions about who Jesus really was and maybe even what he might be like today. There's not much to say about the class thus far but im kinda excited to just dive in and get started.
